A LEISURE complex is set for a £3 million revamp.
Council bosses plan to give the Worsley Fit City swimming baths, built in the 1930s, a complete modernisation.
work will start this year following a £1.9 million grant from the Big Lottery Fund and a further £900,000-plus from Salford City Council.
The building, in Bridgewater Road, Walken, has two learner pools and a 50 metre main pool, in addition to a sauna, changing facilities and a fitness suite.
The transformed facilities will include completely refurbished pools, new changing rooms for school groups and a completely overhauled changing area.
There will be a fitness room with a full range of gym equipment, an activities room for aerobics, car parking and access road with lighting and CCTV.
The facilities represent a boost for the community and schoolchildren from St Andrew's Primary School, Boothstown, along with English School swimmer James Doolan, have been celebrating the plans.
Final approval for the detailed scheme should come from Lottery bosses in August.
The pool is owned by Salford City Council and run by the Salford Community Leisure Trust.
It will close in October until July 2006, while the refurbishment is carried out by contractors Cruden Construction. Cllr Barry Warner said: "This proposal represents a significant investment for the city and in particular the Worsley area.
"Once this work is complete we will have a truly 21st century facility that will be used by elite swimmers and for family fun.
"We are absolutely committed to investing in these facilities around the city, and this project reflects our continued commitment to swimming development in Salford.
"Our swimming squad is already a formidable outfit with a number of champion swimmers learning their skills here in recent years.
"But the important thing about Fit City Worsley is that it will truly be a 21st century facility for everyone."
