TRADE secretary John Nott has refused to order a further crackdown on foreign imports to protect the British textile industry.
Bradford North Labour MP Ben Ford and Mr Nicholas Winterton, Tory MP for Macclesfield, wrote to the minister demanding greater protection for the home textile industry against cheap foreign imports.
But Mr Nott replied: "The clothing and textile industry at present enjoys more comprehensive protection than at any other time in its history."

THE first-ever annual dinner of the Bolton borough magistrates will be held tonight when the principal guest will be the Recorder of Bolton, Mr D. J. Brabin QC.
Even in the austere atmosphere of the Bolton Quarter Sessions, the charm and sense of humour of the Recorder can be detected and he should have some interesting stories to tell.
CLLR Robert Allen, who is to be the next Mayor of Morecambe, is one of hundreds of Boltonians who have left their native town for the holiday town.
They have banded themselves together in a Boltonians Association which meets monthly and has an annual dinner.
100 years ago from the Evening News March 17, 1905
Whilst some children were playing in the bedroom of the house, 220 Deane Road, yesterday afternoon, the clothing of Joseph Atherton (2), caught fire and he was severely burned about the face and arms.
It is believed that the unfortunate child was tampering with the bedroom fire.
"IS it wrong to have Sunday dinner parties?" was the curious topic selected by the rector of All Hallows, London, in a Lenten address during the dinner hour to a congregation consisting of 14 men and ten women.
The rector said that no doubt at week-end parties the guests attended the parish churches, but the dinner to follow prevented servants engaging in religious observances.
He believed that much of the dishonesty, drunkenness and immorality among domestic servants was directly traceable to the selfishness of employers in the matter of Sunday entertaining.
