SECONDARY school pupils have been asked to choose the winner of the Bolton Children's Book Award 2005.
The award, which is in its first year, is designed to celebrate great literature written by leading authors for children between the age of 11 and 14.
A total of 24 children from Canon Slade School, Thornleigh Salesian College, Turton High School and Withins School have familiarised themselves with the eight books short listed.
The award is a joint project organised by the Bolton Schools Library Service, Bolton Literacy Trust and school librarians from secondary schools in Bolton.
The eight children's books on review are: Millions by Frank Cottrell Boyce, Dizzy by Cathy Cassidy, Horace by Chris d'lacy, The Defender by Alan Gibbons, Underworld by Catherine MacPhail, The Recruit by Robert Muchamore, The Lost by Alex Shearer and Avril Crump by Angela Woolfe.
All the books are available to borrow from Bolton libraries. The children will cast their votes before May 24 and have the opportunity to attend a formal presentation event in July, for the winning authors, at the Bolton Festival Hall.
Cllr Martyn Cox, executive member of culture,, said: "As a new initiative the Children's Book Award is proving to be hugely popular."
