BOXING hero Amir Khan's coach did a double take when organisers of the Bolton Legends dinner at the Reebok announced he had won the raffle - two tickets to see Amir fight!
Mick Jelley was a guest at the dinner on Sunday along with Amir's parents and dipped his hand into his pocket to buy two strips of raffle tickets for £10. But he was amazed when the raffle was drawn and his ticket number, 290, was pulled out of the hat.
And there was laughter when it was revealed that the prize was two hospitality tickets to the Amir Khan fight night at the Reebok Stadium on April 16.
"Out of 600-odd people, there I go and win the tickets for an event I am organising. It was fate," said Mr Jelley.
The boxing coach decided that the best thing to do was to swap the prize with whoever won the tickets for the Elton John concert he fancied going to.
But there was another surprise for lucky Mr Jelley - he won those too!
"I am quite lucky. On another occasion, I won a teddy bear and a bottle of Champagne," he said. Mr Jelley took Amir's parents home at the end of the evening and bumped into the teenage boxer as he was also getting home after a night out.
He was amused when his dad told him the raffle ticket story. "He started laughing his head off," said Mr Jelley.
With Mr Jelley planning to be with Amir at the ringside when he fights at the Reebok, he now faces a decision about what to do with his raffle prize tickets.
"I think I will give them away. There are so many different people I owe favours to," he said.
