HUMPHREY Spender's pictures of Boltonians in the 1930s have provided wonderfully accurate images of life at this time.
His Mass Observation project photographs were meant to provide unsuspecting, graphic pictures, which meant young Spender was often told to "clear off" - although you suspect in stronger language than that!
Bolton's people were as alien to the posh young man from the South as he was to them, but his work has endured.
As Bolton Evening News' photographs of daily activities in bygone times often reveal in our Looking Back pages, it is the ordinary detail which fascinates and which speaks volumes about our existence then.
