LANCASHIRE have moved into the 21st Century with the arrival of a new hover cover adding to the impressive list of improvements involving the playing area at Old Trafford.
The cover which cost more than £100,000 is 100ft long and covers the entire length of a wicket.
Head groundsman Peter Marron said: "It is certainly impressive and in the event of rain will enable us to cover the wicket in half the time with half the effort."
The cost of the cover was met by the club's Development Association wich in the last 10 years has raised over £1m.
Chief Executive Jim Cumbes said: "We are extremely grateful to the Development Association for their help with this. It is an expensive piece of equipment, and being only the second in the world to be produced - the other one is at Lord's - it keeps Old Trafford in the forefront as a Test Ground.
"We believe Peter Marron to be the best Groundsman in the country and he and his staff deserve the best equipment."
The hover cover, which works on the same principle as the hovercraft is the brainchild of Donald Kenyon, the managing director of Stuart Canvas Products, of Warrington.
