A DAREDEVIL pensioner who completed dozens of stunts to raise money for charity has died at the age of 87.

Harold Lever was known for his untiring charity work and dedication to his local church and Scout groups.

The great-grandfather completed abseils, ran 20 marathons and enjoyed several parachute jumps, one of which was to celebrate his 80th birthday.

He also took part in a charity bungee jump and tackled the Krypton Factor assault course at the age of 82.

Mr Lever, who lived in Deane, ended his daredevil days in 2000 after his final skydive from 10,000 feet.

He raised thousands of pounds for charities, especially the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign, after his nephew, Kenneth, died of the disease.

When his health deteriorated, Mr Lever remained a dedicated member of Deane Church where he attended for 56 years and was a keen bell-ringer and sang in the church choir five weeks before his death this week. The father-of-five died at the Royal Bolton Hospital after an illnesses.

Mr Lever, who was born in Bolton and attended the Bolton Municipal school, spent several years in the RAF during the Second World War.

One of five children, he worked at Moor Lane Bus Station, and his last job was as a bus inspector.

His son Alan, aged 55, said his father would be remembered as a "kind and quiet man".

He said: "He gave his life to help children, and later on to raise money for charity. He enjoyed everything he did so much, and was fantastically active right to the end of his life.

"He was a very popular man and was incredibly kind. Everyone had a kind word for him. He will missed by many people."

Mr Lever's funeral will take place on Tuesday at Deane Church at 9.15am.
