DETECTIVES are hunting the attackers of a man left for dead in a Bolton back street on Saturday night.

Passers-by found the man, who is in his 30s, collapsed in Coe Street, on the outskirts of the town centre just after midnight on Sunday.

It was thought the man, who had two wounds to the back of the head and was unconscious, had been involved in a road accident, but police now believe he had been assaulted.

Ambulance crews alerted police as they took him to the Royal Bolton Hospital. He has since been transferred to the neurological ward at Chorley Hospital with severe head injuries. His condition is described as serious but stable.

Attempts are being made to identify the man who is described as being in his mid 30s. He has mousey hair and was wearing blue jeans, a blue and white checked shirt and black shoes.

Coe Street was closed while investigations into the incident were carried out. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Bolton CID on 0161 872 5050.
