I HAVE lived in Bolton for most of my adult life and have grown to love the place. l am one of the 80,000 adults who cannot believe what Agora and our councillors plan to do to one of our most beautiful buildings.
We have some beautiful old buildings in the centre of town, all of which should be cherished and protected. This is a responsibility that falls to our elected officials who, in this instance, are failing miserably.
In the case of the Market Hall, it apparently needs a new roof but surely the lease was negotiated in such a way as to ensure that this was the owner's responsibility. If it wasn't then this is yet another failing on the part of the council. By sub-letting the Hall, Bolton has netted a regular profit of £400,000. Good management would have ensured that some of this money was set aside for just this eventuality.
I saw the presentation provided by Agora in the Market Place a few weeks ago, all glass and chrome, the only thing internally that was recognisable is the roof. I cannot comment politely about the glass debacle that is planned externally. Please don't let this happen.
I live in hope that our councillors will cede to the weight of public opinion and reconsider, but failing that I hope that the stallholders continue their fight knowing that the majority of the electorate do not want these extreme and unsuitable changes.
