STEPHEN and Janet Worthington's World Cup qualification hopes have ended for another year.

While England were dishing out a 4-0 thrashing to Northern Ireland on Saturday, the Little Lever husband and wife were playing World Cup qualifiers in the tabletop version of the game at the National Football Museum in Preston. If the couple had reached the final, they would have represented England in the World Cup in Belgium.

Stephen, aged 44, has been playing Subbuteo since he was five, amassing a huge collection of trophies, while wife Janet, aged 37, already counts the Welsh International Grand Prix trophy among her victories despite only taking up the game 18 months ago.

"Unfortunately we went out at the group stage," said Stephen.

The couple's next major event is the Federation of International Subbuteo Table Football Satellite tournament at Leeds United Football Club in June.
