AT the moment, the British Army is considering replacing real bearskin with a fake alternative in order to make its distinctive headpieces for the five Guards Regiments.
But this transition, if agreed, could take some years! In the meantime, bears are dying!
It takes two dead bears to make just one headpiece. In the USA and Canada, entire families of bears - including cubs - are slaughtered by ruthless hunters just to supply buyers of bearskins, such as the British Army.
As bears are becoming increasingly endangered, this is extremely worrying, and I urge readers who are as concerned as I am about this, to write a polite letter to the Secretary of State for Defence, Ministry of Defence, Old War Office Building, Rm 205, Whitehall, London, SW1A 2EU, urging him to stop making Guards' hats out of bearskins while his department works on replacing them with a fake alternative.
