I REFER to the article in the Bolton Evening News of June 1, and welcome the news that Farnworth Town Hall is to have a facelift.
This magnificent building, in the heart of this great town, is steeped in history.
The building used to be the power base of Farnworth; it had its own town council, its own Mayor of Farnworth.
To this day, if you go up the stairs in the building, you can still see the old council chamber with its beautiful stained glass windows, the seating still in place. It is still used for smaller meetings. You can just close your eyes and feel the atmosphere of this magnificent civic building with its own unique character.
As Cllr Raymond Stones said in the Bolton Evening News, "it's excellent news for the people of Farnworth"
I totally agree with his sentiments when he says, "the One Stop Shop is a way in which the people of Farnworth can interact with the functions of the Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council".
Cllr Stones is as much a part of Farnworth as the Town Hall; he, like this superb civic building, is a magnificent tool of knowledge concerning the workings of Bolton Metro. He and his other two colleagues - Cllr Noel Spencer and Cllr Jim Lord - work as an excellent team serving the people of Farnworth.
My only regret is that Farnworth doesn't have its own Mayor any more for, if it did, all three of these councillors are, in my opinion, worthy of the honour of being Farnworths First Citizen. Perhaps we should be putting pressure on our big brother town hall leaders in Bolton Town Hall to bring back the position of Farnworth's First Citizen. I am sure that this would be a return to the past welcomed by the people of Farnworth.
Long may these three councillors represent the people of Farnworth, and a credit to them for their efforts in securing a deal which will see the Town Hall preserved, improved, and put to a greater use.
This new service of a One Stop Shop for the people of Farnworth will benefit everyone in Farnworth. It will also benefit people in the neighbouring areas, such as Little Lever, Kearsley and Stoneclough. This will allow them to access more council services without having to travel into Bolton and visit the big ivory tower (Town Hall).
