NEW traffic sensors are being fitted on a Bolton road in a bid to improve safety and tackle congestion.

The Highways Agency is installing the new detectors beneath the M61 at Junction 5, Hunger Hill.

They will sense how fast traffic is moving on the road.

If traffic is slow the sensors trigger warning signs to warn approaching traffic to slow down because of congestion,.

It is hoped that the warning signs will reduce the risk of accidents from fast moving vehicles which fail to slow down before reaching the stationary traffic.

Full carriageway and slip road closures and diversions will be needed when the sensors are installed so the job can be completed safely for both motorists and workers.
