A GUIDE dog called Ferny is being trained in memory of a man who was killed in a road accident.
Friends and family of Mark Fernside, from Astley Bridge, have raised £10,000 to train a guide dog as a lasting tribute to him.
They raised the money by hosting a special night at the Edge Tavern and having a collection for Mark, on Cup Final day.
Marks family also requested that donations were given instead of flowers at his funeral.
His parents Joan and Terry Fernside, his wife Veronica, his sister Trudi Standish and his friend Paul Stone went to the training centre in Lowndes Street, Bolton, to present the cheque to the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.
And while there they met some of the puppies currently undergoing guide dog training.
The money they have raised will be used to train a guide dog puppy named Ferny.
Tish Kennor of Guide Dogs for the Blind Association said: "Mark was a very popular person.
"We are delighted that because of this generosity, he will be remembered through a very special guide dog".
