BOLTON teenager Amy Hunt has proved herself Britain's top junior cyclist with a string of national titles.

The 18-year-old is the number one in the country both on the track and on the road.

She confirmed her status as the country's number one junior girl on two wheels by lifting the British U19s pursuit, points race and time trial titles on the track, as well as the 85km road title.

Her sights are set on competing for Great Britain in the Junior Commonwealth Games on either the track or road -- or both -- in Australia in November.

British team chiefs will decide which events Amy will be entered into in the next fortnight.

The Lostock girl has a long history of success on two wheels. She began winning trophies in mountain biking as a child, but the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in 2001 brought about an enforced switch to road and track racing.

"When mountain bike racing got hit by foot and mouth, I took up racing on the road and track," said the Lostock girl, who is studying sports psychology at the University of Central Lancashire at Preston.

"I enjoyed mountain biking, but as you get older there are a lot more opportunities on the road and track. You need speed on the track and strength for road racing, and at the moment I compete mostly on the road.

"In the future, I would like to get on to the Great Britain women's endurance squad in the next few years and take up the sport full time."

Amy got an early taste of what it will be like competing against the top British women when she took part in the National Track Championships at the Manchester Velodrome last weekend.

She proved she could handle herself in elite company by finishing eighth out of the top 16 pursuit racers in the country.
