I READ the article regarding the survey on Bolton with great interest. I was born and brought up in Bolton and lived there until 1976.
I have lived in Bermuda for the past 24 years, however, I still consider myself a Bolton lass and come home a couple of times every year.
I have seen many changes - some good and some bad. I remember when the shops on Newport Street looked "cutting edge" modern, and now they look so tired and old-fashioned. The Market Place is much nicer than it used to be.
Yes, many of the shops are cloned these days, but, in one sense that can be good. Having been born in 1949, I remember when textile and light engineering industries were major forces in the workplace. Despite the loss of those industries which employed thousands, their disappearance is good for the overall appearance of Bolton, and of course for the health of the residents.
As a nurse I feel that one of the greatest losses to Bolton, both as a building and as a facility, is the closure and demolition of Bolton Royal Infirmary. It was a wonderful hospital - historical, sprawling and so very British.
