TWO drivers were seriously injured after a car being pursued by police smashed head on into another.
An unmarked police car, which had its siren sounding and lights flashing, was following a blue Volvo S40 T4 at 9.40pm on Tuesday night.
As the Volvo drove in to Agecroft Road, Prestwich, it hit a blue Vauxhall Astra. Both drivers suffered serious internal injuries.
The 20-year-old driver of the Volvo was taken to Hope Hospital, and the 42-year-old driver of the Astra suffered a broken leg as well as internal injuries.
He was transferred to Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Both drivers are described as in a serious condition.
The smash happened under the railway bridge near Bolton Road and Agecroft Road was closed between Lunns Lane and Bolton Road.
The police driver has been relieved of driving duties pending a investigation, which is normal practice after such an incident.
Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward, including a lorry driver who may have been involved in the incident without his knowledge.
Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 5072 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
