I HAVE read about several independent surveys, one of which the new Economic Foundation states the general concern regarding the increasing number of towns becoming "clone towns"
High streets, old buildings and businesses have been replaced by glass and concrete blandness, full of the same chain stores and cheap retail outlets, therefore destroying the fabric and character of more and more local communities. Sound familiar?
So please, local councillors and planners, take advice, and think again regarding the changes to the Market Hall before it is too late. That would make us proud.
By all means spend on the necessary repairs to develop Bridge Street, but keep it traditional to the surrounding area and retain the original fabric. Give more support to encourage small individual traders, and retain the character of our special town to prevent it becoming another clone town shopping mall.
To help preserve the few historic buidlings we have left for future generations to admire would be a fitting memorial to Fred Dibnah I am sure. He too appreciated architecture.
