THE debate as to what constitutes good design is, and should always be, subjective.

However, in my view, good design and good manners and respect for the surroundings should go hand in hand.

I have looked at photos published in your newspaper of the new arch/bridge along Newport Street.

I have to say that someone "got it badly wrong".

In a rural setting with a vista or by a sea coast, this structure would be a delight.

In the middle of a street in my home town, it ignores all of the fine architecture and engineering structures that I have always treasured - the Town Hall, the Market Hall, the many viaducts and bridges.

A great opportunity was missed.

But you are now stuck with it, dear citizens, and that is the problem when "design" goes wrong.
