THERE is obvious concern about the issue of disposal and recycling of household waste.

1. Literature issued by the council states that the items to be disposed of should be placed "at the edge of your property at the nearest point to the pavement/footpath or highway".

In practice, most householders place all items on the pavement.

Recent inquiries with the borough's legal department confirmed that, in the event of an accident, for example tripping over the green box, the householder would be legally responsible.

Normal property insurance would not cover this event, therefore the householder could face serious financial liabilities. Empty containers are also frequently blown into the road, causing additional hazards.

2. Readers have already reported concerns regarding the health hazards posed by open-topped boxes. As a nurse, I fully endorse these concerns.

3. The requirement to have all waste ready for collection by 7.30am is, at best, inconvenient to many, especially the elderly, regardless of their state of health.

I have the answer. All items to be disposed of should be collected from the property where they are normally stored, and subsequently returned.

No doubt "cost, cost, cost" will be the response. Well, let the bureaucrats do some realistic cost-saving exercises from within their own budgets.

Is it time for Boltonians to say enough is enough?
