A LANDLORD is to be given a warning by police after he put a sign outside his pub which banned travellers.
Ian Briscoe positioned the "Sorry, No Travellers" sign outside the Hockery Brook pub in Wigan Road, Hindley, after he was threatened twice by people he claims were from the travelling community.
He took the sign down last week after a group of travellers, who were camping nearby, were moved on.
But a police spokesman said officers would visit the pub after complaints.
The Gipsy Council, which represents travellers' interests, claims the sign breached the Race Relations Act.
Mr Briscoe, aged 63, said he wrote the sign after a family threatened to break his arms and leave him with black eyes and later returned to the pub to demand drinks after closing time.
His wife, Hazel, said: "It was a terrifying experience.
"Were not racist at all - it was those travellers who caused the trouble and travellers who have been barred."
A police spokesman said: "A local officer will be attending the pub to advise the licensee that displaying this type of material is illegal."
