JUSSI Jaaskelainen has revealed the secret behind Owen Coyle’s recent success at the Reebok.

The veteran keeper reckons the manager pulled off a masterstroke on his arrival in January by bringing back players that had been forced to the periphery by previous boss Gary Megson.

The likes of Riga, Danny Shittu and Paul Robinson had been training with the reserves before the Glaswegian walked through the doors of the Reebok.

And the big Finn says the galvanising effect of their return has prompted Wanderers to climb steadily away from the relegation zone with three wins from their last four games.

“He has given everyone a fair chance and that has kept us together,” Jaaskelainen said.

“Everyone is back training together now and that is a very important thing.

“Each manager has his own different style but I really think he is the right man for this club. I think he is going to have a great career here.”

Saturday’s 4-0 victory over local rivals Wigan summed up the recent renaissance - and relieved a lot of the pressure on Wanderers heading into a tough four-game run, which begins at Everton this weekend.

Jaaskelainen is convinced that his side can continue to climb the league, and believes Coyle’s more attacking approach will be easier to adopt now that the club have escaped the shackles of the bottom three.

“I know people talk a lot about the particular style of football but as far as I’m concerned the only style that matters is winning football,” he said.

“For a manager, I guess it depends on what players you have.

“When you are under pressure it is not as easy to play free-flowing football but, in spite of where we are in the league, I think we are playing some pretty decent stuff. When you are in the bottom three, the pressure is a little bit different.

“Hopefully now we will have more confidence and we can continue climbing.”

At the other end, Jaaskelainen has been able to keep five clean sheets in his last 12 games, despite the absence of Gary Cahill in the back four.

And the keeper concedes that Wanderers have looked a more organised outfit under the new boss.

“Everyone is playing well, not just the back four,” he said. “The midfield players are doing their bit and so are the forwards.

“We know we have to defend as a team, and that starts with the forwards doing their job.

“Earlier on in the season, I think that was possibly one of the problems. We didn’t do too well as a unit.

“We didn’t close people down or stay with the runners - now the manager is telling us to do the right things and we are doing them.

“We didn’t have any clean sheets before the new manager came on board in January but since then we have had four in the league, which tells you everything you need to know about the influence he has had.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle United are said to be considering a loan move for Wanderers defender Andy O’Brien.

Magpies boss Chris Hughton is on the look out for a new centre half to cover for the injured Fabio Coloccini and Danny Simpson, although The Bolton News understands that no contact has been made by the North East club.
