KELLY'S EYE: I doubt that he will be brave enough and bold enough to do it, but Fabio Capello could do a lot worse than to name Kevin Davies in his World Cup squad.
I would take him to South Africa if I was the England boss because Davo is without doubt the best target man in the division and it didn’t surprise me in the least that Owen Coyle chucked his name in the frame after his outstanding performance in Saturday’s win at West Ham.
I know his goalscoring record lets him down, but he showed on Saturday that, given the right service, he can be as devastating and destructive as anybody.
More importantly, England need leaders on the pitch and leadership comes naturally to the Bolton captain — just ask any of his team-mates.
He’s been outstanding in a Bolton shirt and a place in the national squad is no more than he deserves.
There’s always a late call-up and I, for one, wouldn’t be surprised if Capello had Davo on his list of possibles.
He certainly led from the front on Saturday when I thought the final scoreline actually flattered West Ham, considering the number of chances created.
The game could have been done and dusted by half time - and on another day Johan Elmander might have had a hat-trick. I don’t attach any blame to the lad for that, although I would obviously like to see him score more goals. You can’t fault him though for the effort he puts in — and that’s every game he plays, not just the odd one or two.
It was a great team performance and one that showed a lot of spirit because, down to 10 men after Tamir Cohen was sent off, they needed to link arms to make sure they kept the three points.
Back-to-back wins has obviously made a big difference, confidence-wise, but I know Owen won’t be letting anyone get carried away.
They’ve got another big game at Sunderland tonight, then it’s Wigan here at the Reebok on Saturday.
If they can build on what they achieved against Wolves and West Ham, that little prediction of mine last week that we could be safe by the end of the month might well turn out to be accurate.
David Lee brought back memories of our old Bolton boss Bruce Rioch yesterday when he gave the youth team players a pleasant surprise when they came in for what they thought would be a normal training session.
They’ve been a bit down after a poor run of results so Didsy decided to give them a break from their normal routine and took them off for a walk.
They appreciated it too. They got a break from the pressure, had a good laugh and it was great for team spirit.
Just the sort of thing Bruce Rioch used to do with us from time to time. And it always worked.
