FOOTBALL: Leigh Genesis take on Skelmersdale tomorrow looking to progress in the FA Trophy.
They crashed out of the Unibond League Challenge Trophy when a second-string side lost 4-0 to Mossley in midweek and suffered a similar fate against Woodley Sports in the Unibond Presidents Cup.
They are still involved in the Lancashire Trophy, but apart from the league, the FA Trophy is realistically manager Garry Flitcroft’s main target for cup success. Skelmersdale are lying fifth in the Unibond First Division North, just one place ahead of Genesis, but the two sides are yet to meet in the league.
Radcliffe Borough boss Gerry Luczka is hoping to have reccruited an experienced centre-back by the time his men kick off at UniBond Division One North high-flyers Curzon Ashton tomorrow.
Having leaked 13 goals in their last four matches the Boro director of football now wants a guiding hand at the heart of his defence.
He has underlined that Boro have suffered from the recent departures of the highly-rated duo Craig Dawson and Lee Unsworth.
“We feel we need more experience in that position,” said Luczka. “The lads who have played there have done a great job for us, but we feel, at times, there is just a little bit of naivety in certain areas. We someone who can hold things together.
Luczka, meanwhile, has signed former Wigan Athletic winger Tom Williams, who can play on either flank. The 19-year-old has had restricted opportunities so far this season at Bamber Bridge.
FC United will have to overcome the disappointment of back-to-back defeats when they travel to Lancaster in the FA Trophy.
The Rebel Reds’ dreams of FA Cup glory were dashed when strikes Mark Danks, an Adam Tong own goal and Wayne Riley condemned them to a 3-0 defeat at Northwich Victoria.
“We’ve had a great run,” said FC manager Karl Marginson. “Credit to the lads for getting so far.”
There will be extra spice for the Vodkat League Cup second round clash at the weekend when Daisy Hill host Atherton LR.
Daisy, who have had an encouraging start to their season in the Vodkat North West Counties First Division, will be after upsetting their neighbours who play in a higher division.
Atherton Colls are in league action where they will be after precious league points at Oldham Boro, a side also desperate to haul themselves away from the bottom of the First Division.
