TODAY’S photograph shows part of Victoria Square in September, 1954.
The parish church can be seen in the distance. From left, there was the Northern House ladies’ fashion shop, Thomas Cook & Son, the Duckworth’s lingerie shop, Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe, Ribble Motor Services, Alston’s grocery, Bradshaw’s pet food and accessories shop, Lumb and Smith’s window shop, T A Hindle’s hardware shop and then the Famous Army Stores.
Just off the picture to the right was Hunter’s dyers and cleaners and another army shop.
The whole of the street front was rebuilt between 1961 and 1969.
