MORE than 170 pupils at a secondary school are getting behind Bolton’s Marie Curie Nurses Appeal.
Year Eight children at Ladybridge High, in Deane, are backing the campaign this school year.
They will be staging various fundraisers throughout the appeal, with the proceeds going towards the £200,000 target.
Marie Curie Cancer Care wants to raise the total in just a year and The Bolton News is backing the campaign to help the charity reach its goal.
The money will help Marie Curie to provide more free nursing care for the terminally ill in Bolton in their own homes.
Teacher Sinbad Barrago, head of Year Eight, said: “Marie Curie Cancer Care contacted the school to see if we wanted to do some fundraising and help the appeal.
“I think it’s a great cause and I thought we could help.
“As head of year I support pupils who have family members with cancer as they don’t always know how to deal with it.
“I feel everyone has someone close to them or knows someone with cancer. This is something the pupils can relate to and something positive.
“We’re busy coming up with fundraising ideas at the moment and will be doing a lot throughout the year to raise money.
“We just want to raise as much as we can.”
The 175 pupils hope to stage a sponsored walk and come up with an environmental event which will also benefit the local community, like planting flowers.
Hannah Taylor, community fundraiser for Marie Curie, said: “We're delighted Year Eight at Ladybridge High School have chosen to support the appeal over the coming academic year.
“Every £20 the pupils raise will enable us to provide another hour of that specialist one-to- one home nursing care in Bolton.
“We’d love to speak to other schools about supporting the appeal and we have activities pupils can get involved in as well as support for pupils to come up with their own ideas.”
Any school wanting to join the appeal should contact Hannah on 0161 255 2809 or 07798 638127.
