MARK Turnbull powered up the hill in Sunday's annual Ramsbottom Rake hill climb to become the fastest finisher from any of the clubs in the Bolton area.
The Leigh Premier Road Club rider was one of the leading contenders in the 947-yard uphill race, which has been going for more than 60 years and which attracted 70 cyclists from as far afield as Bath, Newcastle and Birmingham.
The winner was Matt Clinton from Birmingham, who completed the course in 2 minutes 26.9 seconds and won the £800 first prize.
Adrian Lawrence, of Kearsley, was the first member of Lancashire Road Club — which promoted the race — to cross the line in 2:53, and became club champion in the process.
Lyn Hamel, of Cumbria, won the ladies’ competition in 3:21.6 and West Pennine Road Club won the team prize.
