THE Mayor’s Mile 2010 has been officially launched — with the help of two of Bolton’s Marie Curie nurses.

The event, which raised £10,000 for local causes in March, is to become an annual fundraiser and it is hoped next year’s mile will boost the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal.

The charity, which is being supported by The Bolton News, is running a campaign to raise £200,000 in Bolton to provide more free nursing care to terminally-ill people.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is asking people to sign up for the Mayor’s Mile in aid of its appeal, but walkers can also fundraise for other charities and the mayor’s causes will also benefit.

The charity walk, which was instigated by last year’s Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Anthony Connell, and took place at the Reebok Stadium, will move to the town centre. Participants will do five-and-a-half laps of the town hall, with Le Mans Crescent closing for the day, on Sunday, March 7, 2010.

Current mayor, Cllr Norman Critchley said: “It will be such a fun event and it’s so easy to do, anybody can take part.

“We want lots of people to join in and raise money for Marie Curie but they can choose another cause if they want to.”

He was joined by nurses, Sue Irwin, the face of the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal, and Pam McCarthy, to launch the event this week.

Hannah Taylor, community fundraiser for Marie Curie, said: “Please support our appeal by joining our Daffodil Team for the Mayor’s Mile. Help us provide more home nursing care in Bolton by going yellow for this fantastic event.”

To sign up for the Mayor’s Mile contact 01204 331090 or write to Mayor’s Office, Second Floor, Town Hall, Victoria Square, Bolton BL1 1RU.

Entry is £5 per person, reduced for groups depending on their size, and will go to the mayor’s charities; Bolton Destitute Animal Shelter, Diabetes UK, Manchester Heart Centre and the Bolton Thoracic Medicine Unit at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

Walkers may then get sponsorship, which will go to a cause of their choice.
