A HUSBAND and wife team are going that extra mile — or 10 to be exact — for the Marie Curie Nurses Appeal.
Andrew and Cheryl Shields are taking on the challenge of running between Blackpool and Fleetwood in October and will donate all the proceeds to the campaign.
Marie Curie Cancer Care has launched the appeal in Bolton, backed by The Bolton News, to raise £200,000 in 12 months.
The money will provide vital nursing care, allowing terminally ill people to die in their own homes.
Mr and Mrs Shields, of Higher Swan Lane, Daubhill, decided to fund raise for the charity after reading about the campaign in The Bolton News.
Mrs Shields, aged 38, said: “We are not big runners, neither of us have done much before, but we decided to do this 10-mile run.
“Cancer is close to our hearts because we have lost relatives and my mum, Christine Meadwell, is recovering from breast cancer, so we wanted to raise money for a cause which helps people with cancer.
“My mum told me about Marie Curie then I saw an article in The Bolton News and we decided to fund raise for the appeal.
“I think what the nurses do is brilliant, it is a service people need.”
Marie Curie nurses care for people with cancer and other terminal illnesses in their own homes, enabling them to die surrounded by their loved ones in familiar surroundings.
The couple, who have three boys, Jake, aged 10, Daniel, aged four and Harley, aged two, will take on the challenge on Sunday, October 11.
They will start at Blackpool’s North Pier and run 10 miles up the coast to Fleetwood’s leisure centre.
Mr and Mrs Shields hope to raise several hundred pounds.
