RUGBY UNION: A mixed squad from Bolton RUFC 1st and 2nd XVs enjoyed a good workout in a trials game at local neighbours Wigan on Saturday.
The home side, who play two leagues higher than Bolton, started slightly brighter with a more confident style, however they only managed a solitary foray towards the Bolton try line which resulted in a 7-0 lead.
Both teams were trying out a number of players and there were numerous examples of rustiness.
But, after some good work from centres Bolton and Plimmer, Green and Crimmins combined before Critchlow crashed over to record Bolton’s first points.
Bolton remained committed to attack and defended resolutely until they conceded a needless penalty from which Wigan crossed for the decisive try 10 minutes from time.
Bolton continued to press with good efforts from Pritchard and Crimmins in the backs while the two Singleton brothers tried manfully to open up the game, but it was the defences which came out on top.
Good set pieces throughout ensured Bolton had adequate ball to play with turnovers won in number by the dogged play of both Brodie and Cooper in the forwards, however they just lacked the cutting edge to win the game.
Pre-season training continues ahead of the first league games next month and players new and old are invited to attend the Tuesday and Thursday sessions which take place at Avenue Street from 7pm.
Bolton RUFC are also hosting a club mini fun day on Sunday, August 30, starting at 12 noon to raise funds for the coming season.
