JUSSI Jaaskelainen admits last season was his best ever – but believes he can still get better.

The goalkeeper was outstanding last term and was one of the main reasons behind Wanderers’ comfortable mid-table finish.

Manager Gary Megson said he would not swap Jaaskelainen for any other keeper in the world after a string of world-class displays.

But the Finland international feels he can still improve further in his 13th season at the Reebok.

“Consistency-wise last season was my best season so far,” said the 34-year-old.

“I want to carry on playing like I have been for the last few years, but I want to improve and get better.

“That’s why you work hard in the gym and on the training ground to do that.

“I’ve said before that the best time for goalkeepers is from 32 or 33 onwards, so now I need to make sure that’s the case.

“I’ve been feeling very good for the last few years and my consistency has been good.”

With some of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League, including Manchester United’s Edwin Van der Sar, Brad Friedel from Aston Villa, and Portsmouth’s David James, all four years older, Jaaskelainen believes he has at least three more years at the top.

And he revealed it is one of his former team-mates who continues to provide his inspiration – Kevin Poole.

Poole, who served as Jaaskelainen’s understudy for four years at the Reebok, became the oldest player in the Football League this season with newly-promoted Burton Albion – and, while the veteran shot-stopper is still in action, the Bolton star has no plans to hang up his gloves.

“I’ve just seen Kevin Poole is 46 so he’s still got 12 years on me,” he joked.

“If you look at all the top goalkeepers they are all around 36, 37, 38, so I’ve still got two or three years before that.

“I’ve got three years left on my contract and I want to finish that – but I definitely want to play beyond that if I’m fit and healthy.”
