THE Marie Curie Nurses Appeal is officially under way after a special launch event at Bolton Town Hall.

The charity has teamed up with The Bolton News in a bid to raise £200,000 over the next 12 months.

Guests at yesterday’s event, which marked the first day of the campaign, included the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Cllr Norman Critchley and his wife, Delyse, and David Crausby, the MP for Bolton North East.

The money raised will help to provide free nursing care for terminally ill people in the town — hopefully doubling the amount currently available.

The intention is to help people with terminal illnesses spend their last days in their own home, rather than having to go to a hospice or hospital.

Hannah Taylor and Jemma Halman, from the fundraising team, spoke at the launch event about the charity’s work and how people can get involved in the appeal.

Sue Irwin, the face of the appeal, also gave a moving speech about her experiences as a Marie Curie nurse. She is urging people to help with the fundraising.

Sue, aged 42, from Bolton, said: “We need support for this appeal to reach more people. The money will fulfil people’s dreams and grant their wishes to die at home.”

People and businesses are being urged to donate what they can or to arrange a fundraiser.
