When sibling duo Lizzie and Hannah Anthony decided they wanted new barnets for Hannah’s birthday they went to hairdressing supremos Barrington Pollard, pictured above, left, and Brent Barlow, right, at Saks in Bolton.
Confronted with one sister who has dry, frizzy hair and one sister who has fine, greasy hair, Barry and Brent had their work cut out — without even taking to their scissors.
Lizzie, before
Lizzie Anthony, aged 27, is a teacher in Haslingden. She explained her hair situation: “It’s very dry at the ends which makes it difficult to style. I’d like it to be big and bouncy and slick. A bit like Cheryl Cole.
“Hopefully Barry will give me some tips on how to do it on my own. Hopefully I will be able to replicate it.”
Barry washed and deep conditioned Lizzie’s hair with a special treatment to ease the frizz. He then blow dried her hair with a curl at the ends. Using pin grips he rolled the hair and clipped it up to cool down. Barry said: “Basically we have gone through and put loads of root lift at the scalp and used a mouse to give it strength. We used a lighter mousse through the lengths and ends so that it doesn’t weigh the hair down, but it still holds the shape and allows the hair to move.
“Once the barrel curls had been in for a while I took them out. I used a lot of lubrication so it didn’t make the hair any more frizzy.
“Then I just raked the curls out. The trick is to not be scared about what you’re doing, you can always put it back in.”

At the end Lizzie said: “I love it. I can’t believe how sleek my hair looks but it’s still got volume.”
Barry said: “It’s was just a nice loose curl really. Obviously it’s what a lot of people are calling the Cheryl Cole! Big hair is really in but what makes it different from the 80s big hair is that we haven’t got the huge bouffant. We have lots of width and volume around the side which is what you want these days.”
Lizzie said: “I think he has done a really good job. I love it.”
Hannah, before
Her sister Hannah is a 23-year-old student at Bury College, She is studying French, Biology and psychology and lives in Deane.
Brent saw to Hannah’s stresses. She had fine, greasy hair and wanted an up-do and more volume to make her hair bounce on her birthday.
Brent started off with a gentle wash, and didn’t include a head massage as this stimulates the sebum.
He then blow dried it and curled it. He took Hannah’s hair section by section, twisted it around and then took a small piece and pulled the hair up to create the bob shape.
Brent said: “We ruched it all and got it into a nice bob shape. The curls are a bit looser as we were going for a natural beauty look. As if she had just woken up and it had fallen into place.
Don’t worry if it looks a bit messy to start with because we just finished it off at the end by putting in a bit of serum to break the curls.”

Hannah said: “It’s really nice, I can’t believe how short it is just using straigteners. There are not many clips in there at all. There was no pain or anything. It was nice and relaxing.”
Brent said: “I think it is a really nice way to get a bit of a different style especially when you’ve got long hair. It’s just nice to do something a bit different. It’s nice to see how she would look with a different style like a bob by just styling it and not cutting it at all.”
In the end both girls were delighted with their transformation and ready for a night on the town — without a pair of scissors in sight.
