PIE ’eck, he’s done it!
Wanderers fan Tom Dickinson has visited every football league stadium in the country in just one season — and all in the name of good grub.
In July, the lifelong Whites fan set out on an ambitious quest to visit all 92 grounds in the top four divisions and tucking into a pie at each of them.
And, in fitting style, Tom, aged 22, from Hertfordshire, completed the challenge on Saturday at the Reebok Stadium as his beloved team took on Hull City.
As he watched Wanderers earn a hard-fought 1-1 draw in a tense encounter, Tom sampled the delights of a chicken balti pie.
He said: “Of course, I’m biased, but the Bolton pie was definitely up there in the top three.
“Morecambe’s was to beat though.”
Tom’s love of Wanderers began when his Bolton godfather took him to a match at Burnden Park in 1996.
He said: “This is my first Wanderers home game this season, so I was thrilled to come with friends and family. It has been a brilliant year.
“It hasn’t been easy. I once had to do six matches in six days. With all the travel, it has been expensive.
“It gives you an insight into proper football. It’s not all about Cristiano Ronaldo playing in front of 75,000 people. There is something lovable about wet Wednesday night games in Grimsby.
“And it fascinates me how you get thousands of people going to grounds each week despite constantly complaining about their team. It’s almost like a tribal thing.”
On Saturday, Tom took a tour of the Greenhalgh’s bakery in Lee Lane, Horwich, where staff prepare thousands of pies destined for each game at the Reebok.
He is now putting the finishing touches to a book, entitled 92 Pies, about his experiences. He hopes it will be published by January.
Tom said: “It will be strange spending this Saturday keeping up to date with Bolton from the comfort of my own armchair, but I’m sure a part of me will be wishing I was somewhere like Yeovil, eating a pie.”
