AN unusually tranquil rural scene in 1984’s traffic-polluted highways.
It must not be forgotten, however, that even the humble horse was responsible for pollution of a different kind in the early years of the century, when hundreds of them plodded the streets pulling carts and carriages of every description.
Now we have petrol and diesel fumes to contend with – and we have to put artificial fertiliser on our gardens!
Even a solitary rider is a welcome sight, however, and gives life to this peaceful picture of Turton Bottoms, with the Spread Eagle on the left and St Anne’s Church, Chapeltown, on the horizon.
