That’s the news hot off the Selfridges catwalk according to director of menswear, David Walker Smith.
Apparently the guys in the office should be wearing their trousers turned up and their socks on parade, or not at all.
And the brighter the better. Grab these from Marks & Spencer at £5 for a pack of four or go more up market and get these red numbers at £15 from Paul Smith or theis cobalt blue pair at John Smedley, also at £15.
The main key trends were all very different, and don’t forget you will be able to find cheaper alternatives on the high street.
English Summer - This is all about the colour. Brights mixed with subtle sands. Linen suit, Zegna, £650, rose print shirt, Paul Smith, £100, skinny tie, Peckhamrye, £55, belt, Gucci, price on application.
Double Breasted Jacket - Dressing smart has never been more on-trend. Forget tuxedos of old, this is what you need to be picking up for thjat special occasion - spot the double buttons on the shirt, it’s going to be massive. Shirt, Balenciaga, £218. Jacket, Balenciaga, £1375. Frames, Prada, £175.
Spring Coats - This was the look voted, the most likely to be worn in the North West (unofficially). This look is very Arctic Monkey’s Alex Turner and an updated Oasis look. Shoulder bag, Alexander McQueen, £620. Parka, Aquascutem, £795. Jeans, Martin Margiela,£190. White shirt, Unconditional, £110. Cardigan, Unconditional, £250. Scarf, All Saints, £35.
American Sportswear - This is all about being prep hot. Inspired by all American sport stars. Navy and reds sports jacket, Supreme Being, £70. Navy sweatshirt, Ralph Lauren, £90. Grey sweat shorts, Adidas, £50. Black belt, Dsquared, £100.
White - This look is pure style. White, according to David, creates the appearance of wealth. If you’re wearing white you’ll need to be able to afford to keep it clean, that means endless dry cleaning runs and not using public transport. Why not try adapting your wedding wardrobe and pick this outfit next time you’re dragged to a bash. Blazer, Aquascutem, £345. Scarf, Gucci, £147.
T-shirt, J Lindberg, £55. Trousers, Ted Baker, £180.
New Denim - Who says you can’t be smart when you’re dressing down. This look takes the casual look to the dinner jacket. This is so easy to replicate. We are not talking denim jackets - we are looking at a blazer here. We swish lapel in contrasting black. It will keep you smart without looking like a penguin.
Eveningwear - Last but not least we get to this stunning jacket. You’re going to have to be fashion forward to pull this look off. It’s borderline couture but it will certainly help you stand out from the crowd. The jacket is inspired by the “smoking jacket” culture and amazingly transpires the bones of the rib cage, in smoke effect. You should also take note of the double breasted shirt - instead of one column of buttons, you have two. What’s the point I hear you cry. It’s just an added twist and will help you stand out from the crowd. Note the no sock rule to keep you bang on-trend. Jacket, Alexander McQueen, £1695. Glasses, David Clulow for Gucci, £165. Shirt, Eton, £135. Trousers (sold with suit), Ted Baker, £375. Hanky, Thomas Pink, £40.
David said: “I think that some customers will clone the complete look, but then they will mix up the brands.”
“It’s important to trust a brand, as the trends are edited for you and are already selected.”
On sock trends, David said: “Colour is about confidence. As an individual it’s a great vehicle to show that.”
He added: “Suiting is very important. In these times It’s about being employed and about being serious about life. It’s about individuality and survival.”
Word on the street, reporter Liam Chronnell said: “I like the American prep hot look. Obviously it’s inspired by Kanye West. I wouldn’t wear the belt though. It’s a bit too American. I’d mix it up with something a little more discreet.
“I’m not big on flowers so english summer wouldn’t be for me. The smoking jacket is a little too couture.
“The spring coats look is probably the best look. It’s what most people in Bolton will be wearing.
“I think the no socks or show socks debate is da bomb. I’ll be working that trend come the weekend.”
