ANOTHER important link in the “Y” valley reclamation was nearing completion in January, 1981.
About 10,000 trees were being planted and miles of footpaths constructed or restored in the second phase of a major landscaping around Hacken Bridge and Maze Street in Darcy Lever.
The site was once scarred by tips, scrapyards, rubbish and heaps and the remains of a sewage works.
The area forms part of the vast Y-shaped valley formed by the Rivers Croal and Irwell, which flow together about three miles south of the Darcy Lever site at Prestolee.
