FILM director Danny Boyle will find out if he has won a raft of BAFTAs at today's glittering awards ceremony.

The former Thornleigh Salesian College pupil, who was born and raised in Radcliffe, is nominated for best director for his film Slumdog Millionaire.

Penelope Cruz, Dominic Cooper and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle have all arrived at the Royal Opera House in London.

Bookmakers have made Boyle's movie, set in Mumbai, favourite to win the prestigious best film award.

Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are among nominees also expected.

Slumdog Millionaire has 11 nominations, as has Pitt's effects-packed fantasy The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Slumdog Millionaire, about a young orphan’s struggle to survive life in an Indian slum, is also nominated for best film, outstanding British film and best adapted screenplay, as well as best cinematography, editing, production design and sound.

Slumdog’s stars, Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, are also nominated for best leading actor and best supporting actress.

Slumdog Millionaire has already won four Golden Globes, as well as prizes at the Screen Actors Guild awards, the Producers’ Guild of America and the Directors’ Guild of America.

It has also been nominated for 10 Oscars and is favourite to clean up at the ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 22.

Slumdog Millionaire faces stiff competition at the BAFTAs, which will be held at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden.

It is up against The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk and The Reader for the best film award, while Danny Boyle will be competing with Clint Eastwood, David Fincher, Ron Howard and Stephen Daldry for the best director award.
