A SUPERMARKET for shopkeepers opened in Bolton on January 21, 1963.
Just as the housewife goes to the shop, picks up a basket, and wanders round the self-service counters, so now the shopkeeper can go the wholesale warehouse, walk round with an appropriately larger trolley, pay at the exit, and drive back to his shop with his purchases.
Weston’s Cash and Carry Warehouse, in Nile Street is by far the largest in the area and not only in sheer size.
It also has the largest range of items in stock, including all the requirements of the grocery and catering trades, but also requirements for the chemist, the hardware dealer and the corner shop.
Perhaps the best description of the warehouse is that it is a cross between a village store in that it stocks nearly everything it’s customers will need and a supermarket because it is a self-service store at which the trader selects just those items which he wants.
