RADCLIFFE-born director Danny Boyle faces threats of being burned in effigy by furious Indian protesters who are offended by his hit film, Slumdog Millionaire.
Some cinemas in India were guarded by armed police yesterday after activists smashed up a theatre which was showing the Oscar-nominated film.
Real-life slum dwellers are reportedly offended by the use of the word “dog” as it applies to them in the film’s title.
Hundreds of people, led by protester Tateshwar Vishwakarma, trashed the cinema in the city of Patna on Monday. Mr Vishwakarma said: “Referring to people living in slums as dogs is a violation of human rights. We will burn Danny Boyle effigies in 56 slums here.”
Slumdog Millionaire, which opened in India on Friday, won four Golden Globes and has been nominated for 10 Oscars.
