DIVISION One team Withins A produced the most notable victory of the Warburton Cup Second Round when they knocked out Premier Division high fliers, Hilton B.
Making good use of their three points start, Withins won 6-3 with a predictable treble from Paul Brandwood, two wins by Stuart Wallis, and one by Brian Gooddey.
Premier Division Burning Desire A gave Division Four Irlam Steel seven points start but came out on top with an 8-1 win, despite some of the sets being much closer than the score suggests. The victory featured three wins by Ben Armstrong and Lindsey Reynolds, and two by Reena Ardeshana, David Yates winning the consolation set for Irlam.
The two Ramsbottom Premier Division teams comfortably won through to the third round. The A team gave Division Three team Hilton I six points start but ran out 9-0 winners, while Ramsbottom B scored an 8-1 over Meadow Hill A from Division Two who received four start, with trebles by Josh Bleakley and Tim Ternent, and a double by Khamal Hussain. Steve Jones won the Meadow Hill set.
Premier team Little Lever A gave their D team from Division Two four points start, which proved to be insufficient as the A team scored a 9-0 victory. Playing off scratch Hilton Tameside recovered from a 4-3 deficit to beat fellow Premier team Little Lever B 5-4, with three wins by Jake Shaw and two by James Bartolo. John Hutchinson scored two and Ian Lansdale and Roy Costello one each for the losers.
Heaton A from the Premier Division scored a 5-4 victory over Meadow Bank from the Second Division on three start in a close match. Barry Dobbins and Paul Mort each won two, and Paul Ward one for the winners. Paul Pover two, and Paul Whyatt and Richard Hinchcliffe one apiece for the losers. The final team into the third round from the Premier Division is Nomads A who beat a depleted Radcliffee CC 8-1.
Five teams from the First Division progressed to the third round. Nomads B, on two start, beat fellow Division One team Heaton B 5-4 thanks to the three wins by Gareth Palmer, supported by one apiece by Dave Holden and Martin Howarth. John Scowcroft and Steve Barber won two apiece for Heaton.
Heaton D ran out 5-4 winners in a close match at Second Division Hilton Tigers, who received three start. After trailing 4-2 they won the last three sets, the final two on the fifth game, to clinch the win. Alan Cowley and Alan Crompton had two wins and Alan Ingerson one for Heaton, while Marek Maraszkienkz scored two and Chris Naylor and Barry Walsh one each for the Tigers.
Ladybridge A gave Second Division Heaton E two start but came out on top 6-3, with three wins by Dave Bolton, two by Alex Waring, and one by Craig Bradbury. Paul McCormick scored two wins and Steve Woods one for Heaton.
Hilton D gave top Third Division team Ladybrige B four start and scraped home 5-4. In a close match in which six sets were decided on the fifth game John Cartledge and Brett Haslam won two apiece and Lee Davenport one for Hilton, while Brian Greenhalgh scored two and John Birchall and John Cole one each for Ladybridge.
Burning Desire B are in the next round after receiving a walkover.
Two Third Division sides BEN A and Hilton F are in the hat for the third round.
Playing from scratch, BEN scored a comfortable 6-2 win at Hilton E which featured three wins by John Dodd, two by Mike Heaton, and one by Phil Calvert. Gary Hilton scored two and Tony Eardley one for the losers.
Hilton F could only field two players in their match with Hilton L who received four start. But the pair – Brian Cooke and Roger Bertrand – each scored three wins to give them a 6-3 win.
