GOLF: Bolton Old Links Golf Club has just completed another successful year with major achievements in all areas.
The Men’s teams won the BGA Team Championship, under the captaincy of Duncan Simm, and also came runners-up in the Jack Taylor Trophy (foursomes).
In addition, Old Links members David Jones and Simon Whittaker won the BGA four ball better ball medal competition.
The mixed foursomes team, led by captain Kevin Shannon and lady captain Jean Guffogg won the prestigious Manchester Golf Alliance Archie Preston Trophy, a competition that boasted an entry from more than 100 clubs across the region.
The seniors team, marshalled by Barry Prescott, won the Red Rose League and the ladies team came runners-up in the Manchester Ladies Golf Alliance Bell Cup.
Finally the club were very proud when Carol Helme won the Bolton Ladies Championship.
The Bolton Old Links course is recognised as true test of golf and this year continued to host a number of external competitions including the Lancashire Boys vs Yorkshire Boys and The Old Links Trophy, a Northern Order of Merit event.
The course standard scratch was reassessed during the season and was increased from 71 to 72, a testament to the improving condition and standing of the course.
Captain Kevin Shannon said: “Bolton Old Links has always had a reputation for the playing of competitive golf in the right spirit and this has has certainly been a contributor to team successes.”
