A person threatening to commit suicide close to Kearsley railway station caused delays to services just before lunchtime.
A spokesman for Network Rail confirmed the incident and said: "At 11.25 we received a call to say that a person in the station area (but not actually on the station) was threatening to commit suicide on the railway.
"Trains were stopped or diverted until 11.55 when the person was apprehended and removed from the railway."
Train services between Bolton and Salford Crescent are now slowly returning to normal.
