THE Christmas spirit of giving was celebrated in Wingates this week.
The Westhoughton Residents’ Association gave festive hampers to those aged 85 and over and to housebound pensioners.
Association chairman Alan Rhodes said: “The tradition started six years ago because we realised there was an aging population in the village, with some unable to get out and about for whatever reason.
“This year we delivered 20 parcels which included chocolates, toiletries and a selection of buffet food.”
The hampers are paid for through the association funds, which are provided by Westhoughton Town Council, and a number of businesses donate goods.
Next week the residents’ association will put on a Christmas Party for the elderly
