110 YEARS AGO From the Evening News December 10, 1998 A Bolton consultant is to pound the sands in Honolulu, Hawaii, to raise cash for the victims of strokes and their families.
Dr Keatley Adams, Consultant Physician in the Medical and Elderly Directorate, is running in this Sunday’s Honolulu marathon — part of it across sand — to raise cash for the stroke unit at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News December 10, 1983 Bolton’s cat with high ideas has become a transatlantic celebrity.
The ginger tom, rescued from the top of a local factory chimney this week, made its debut on American television.
Evening News reader Mrs Ellen May said that her daughter rang from Los Angeles to say that she had seen the adventurous moggy on the TV news there.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News December 10, 1958 When heat from a chimney started a roof fire at the Hulton Service Station, St Helens Road, Bolton, today, 19-years-old apprentice Bob Liptrott, 50, Beckett Street, climbed up and tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher.
The owner, Mr K P Caffrey, called the fire brigade, which soon had the fire under control.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, December 10 1908 A Russian peasant went to a moneylender to borrow a rouble. He was told that he would have to pay a rouble for interest and to leave his fur coat as security. He agreed.
On leaving he was told he must pay the interest in advance and he handed over the rouble. As a result he had no money and no coat and owed a rouble.
