10 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, December 8, 1998 Life-saving emergency phones stolen from the homes of vulnerable people in Bolton have turned up for sale at a car boot sale.
Housing chiefs were furious when they heard that special Careline telephones were on sale for £3 at a stall on a street market off Lever Street, Bolton. Police and Bolton's housing department are now investigating.
25 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, December 8, 1983 Kearsley power station is to be demolished and its site reclaimed for industry, housing and recreation.
Greater Manchester Council planning committee yesterday gave the go-ahead to a scheme to buy the station from the Central Electricity Generating Board. Its first step will be to strip the potentially dangerous asbestos from the station before demolishing it.
50 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, December 8, 1958 After yesterday’s serious congestion at the junction of the new Preston motorway and the old A6 at Broughton, police and the Lancashire County Surveyor's staff were to-day examining the huge roundabout at the junction to see if the situation could be eased.
100 YEARS AGO From the Evening News, December 8, 1908 A fire which did considerable damage, broke out on Monday afternoon in the pattern storeroom at the works of Messrs. Jackson Bros., Wharf Foundry. The building in which the fire originated abuts on Mill-st., and is one of three storeys. The firm’s brigade, under Captain Rothwell Jackson, lost no time in getting to work with a couple of jets.
