A FATHER and son have taken a vintage lorry on its final journey after they saved it from the scrapheap.
Harry and Graham Davies, who both worked for United Utilities at its Walkden depot, looked after the 1963 AEC generator lorry.
Now the electricity company has donated the truck to the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
It was Harry, now retired, who took delivery of the generator lorry in 1963 and helped keep her on the road for three decades.
Later his son, Graham, an apprentice mechanic at the time, was among those who kept it from rusting away in retirement.
For 30 years the generator lorry helped keep communities from Cumbria to Manchester topped up with electricity during power failures. But with a gallon-a-minute fuel habit, the truck became too expensive to run and in the late 1970s was “retired” from service.
Graham, who is now a fleet manager for United Utilities, said: “She looks immaculate and we’ve kept her MOT up to date.
“She can manage a top speed of 65mph, but is a bit heavy to handle.
“In her heyday she was one of the fastest vehicles on the road, but by today’s standards, the driving experience is pretty horrible.”
