TWO physiotherapists have been recognised for their outstanding contribution to medicine.

Sue Greenhalgh and Professor James Selfe, both of Bolton, have been awarded Fellowships in Physiotherapy.

They join only around 100 fellows out of the 42,000 physiotherapists in the UK.

Mrs Greenhalgh is a consultant physiotherapist for Bolton Primary Care Trust at Lever Chamber Centre for Health in the town centre and Prof Selfe is a professor of physiotherapy at the University of Central Lancashire.

They received the awards for “outstanding contribution to the field of musculoskeletal medicine”, Mrs Greenhalgh in the area of back pain and Prof Selfe for his work with the knee.

Colleagues nominated them individually for the fellowship but they have worked together on a number of projects, including books.

Mrs Greenhalgh said: “It’s great to get this, it’s a real honour.

“It’s a job that I love a lot and it is really rewarding, particularly in Bolton.

“We are doing innovative work here, that has won awards, and now we are getting fellowships.

“We are working at a ground breaking time and my job allows me to make a difference.

“For two of us to get fellowships and both come from Bolton is great.”

The ceremony to present the fellowships took place at the Russell Hotel in London.
