Heavy snow in the North-west is causing major problems on roads in the north of the region, reports the Highways Agency.
Engineers and contractors are working with colleagues across the Pennines to re-open the A66 which closed shortly after 5.30am today following heavy snow.
The route is totally shut between the M6 and A1 with both snow gates in Cumbria and County Durham closed. Cross Pennine drivers are being advised to use the A69 instead.
Conditions are still difficult on the M6 between junctions 38 and 40 through Shap.
Earlier today the route was down to only one lane in each direction but Highways Agency contractors have managed to re-open a further lane in each direction by ploughing and gritting.
Elsewhere in the region Highways Agency routes are running smoothly and the severe weather desk in Area Ten (South Lancs, Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Cheshire) has been stood down.
However, it is wet and windy on the network with spray on carriageways and the Highways Agency is advising drivers to light up, slow down and keep their distance, allowing extra time for braking.
