Mike Watkinson has admitted that he is in favour of Lancashire’s plans to re-jig the structure of the club’s cricket department to create two new positions of director of cricket and first team coach.
The current Red Rose cricket manager will almost certainly find out on Thursday whether he will be asked to move into the director of cricket role to oversee all things cricket at Old Trafford.
Lancashire’s committee will meet today, surely ratify the new proposals, and Watkinson, pictured, then expects them to advertise for a new first team coach.
“From my side of things it became pretty apparent, and to one or two other people as well, that the things that I was asked to do meant I was stretched at times,” explained Watkinson, who lives at Egerton.
“I think it is vital that as much quality time is spent around the first team squad. I encourage and look forward to any moves that can be positive for the team.
“I need to know exactly what comes out of this meeting. It could well be that an extra resource is brought in to be around the first team.
“If that is the case, then it will be pretty obvious that that person will have quite a lot of input in the first team dressing room and out on the field.
But let’s wait to see what happens, let’s wait to see what qualities a new person has.
“There are rumours knocking around, and I am aware of discussions taking place, but I am just waiting until an official announcement has been made.
“When that happens I will crack on, and I will look forward to the new season with a lot of enthusiasm.”
There have not been many names mentioned as possible candidates, although former Sussex captain Chris Adams has been tentatively linked.
Watkinson, who has been cricket manager since 2002, continued: “They don’t have anybody in mind at the moment.
“I would expect if a new position is created they would advertise so that the best candidate out there has the opportunity to apply.”
